Are sick of hearing complaints about the direction our world is headed? Do you feel burdened by the poverty and destitution in the world, but feel that nobody is offering any real solutions? Well, there are solutions that all of us can participate in! Just come to Los Angeles’ first annual Fair Trade Festival and Offering of Letters!

It will be held at the St. Francis of Assisi Parish Hall at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Silver Lake, 1523 Golden Gate Ave. (map here) from 9 am – 2 pm on Sunday, August 13, 2006.

There will be lots of fair trade products being sold, including clothing from NoSweat, as well as information about global and local hunger and poverty, a place to write and offer up letters to representatives. Groups that will be participating are:

St. Francis Peace and Justice, Fair Trade LA/ Oxfam, Bread for the World/ One Campaign, CRS/ Work of Human Hands, Ten Thousand Villages, Equal Exchange Coffee and Chocolate, and Hunger Action LA.

Come ready to buy fair trade products, eat good food, and write letters to representatives about issues concerning the world’s impoverished. You will see how fun and easy it is to lift the burden of poverty from the shoulders of the world’s most needy children.

Fair trade sugar — now at your local grocery store!

3 07 2006

Thought coffee was the only fair trade product you could get at your local grocery store?

Thanks to Wholesome Sweeteners, now you can get fair trade sugar with your fair trade coffee and organic cream.

Not only are most of Wholesome Sweeteners sugars fair trade, they’re also organic and unrefined. And Wholesome Sweeteners really has all kinds of sugar: sucanat, powdered sugar, light brown sugar, dark brown sugar, molasses, raw cane sugar.

You can find Wholesome Sweeteners all over the place — Including the Pavilions on Vine and Melrose, as Michael and Erin, members of Fair Trade LA, recently found out :)

Enjoy the sweetness of fair trade –

We’re a quarter of the way there!

3 07 2006

We’re aiming for 100 surveys from the Fair Trade LA group, and we’re at 25 surveys at the moment!

So — Help us get the rest of the way there by rating your local supermarket! Join Fair Trade LA’s campaign to bring Fair Trade products to the Los Angeles area by rating your local supermarket with a score card — and get a free fair trade canvas shopping bag for your efforts:)

Download the Supermarket Scorecard for Fair Trade LA here (PDF)

Just print out the score card, then go to your local supermarket and look for products with the Fair Trade Certified or Fair Trade Federation labels (below). Also, look for fair trade products or brands that’re being promoted by the store! Rate the store on each product category by variety and visibility :)

If you’re feeling adventurous, ask the store manager or store employees about fair trade products at their store. Rate them on their helpfulness and knowledge of fair trade products.

Because our goal is to improve availability of Fair Trade goods, we’re making allies with storekeepers – showing them the win/win of making Fair Trade goods available and visible.

When you’re finished, please return the scorecard to:

by mail: Fair Trade Los Angeles, 501 Rossmore Ave. #301, Los Angeles, CA 90004
by fax: 323.651.5607
by email: fairtradela@gmail.com
by face: Turn in the forms at any Fair Trade LA events announced on this website!

And we’ll send a canvas bag your way!

Fair Trade LA will compile the results of the survey and make them avaliable on our website. We’ll also use the info when asking store managers to sell more fair trade certified products.

This campaign is run in solidarity with Co-op America’s Adopt-A-Supermarket Campaign and Oxfam America.
