Black Gold: Dates and times

14 08 2006

Get excited — Black Gold, the film that shows the need for fair trade coffee, is most definitely coming to Los Angeles :)

Black Gold’s a hard hitting yet accessible film that brilliantly juxtaposes the bon vivants of the western world (us) — delicately sipping their high-priced espresso drinks — with the crushing poverty farmers producing those same espresso beans.

So — Get thee to the Arclight Hollywood, and you’ll likely get to participate in a Q & A with Marc and Nick, co-directors of the film, who’ll be in town for the screenings.

The times when Black Gold’ll be screened:

8/18 11:50 AM
8/19 1:30 PM
8/20 3:40 PM
8/21 5:50 PM
8/22 8:15 PM
8/23 10:30 PM
8/24 10:00 AM

See you there!

Fair Trade Festival recap :)

14 08 2006

[crossposted on green LA girl]

The first annual Fair Trade Fair was fun and yummy!

Yum tamales from Mama’s Hot Tamales, spunky jewelry from Ten Thousand Villages, and free choco samples courtesy of Fair Trade LA :)

I got there around 10:30 am, and stayed around till things closed down at 2 pm. And I met a lot of really interesting people!

What really amazed me is the strength of will of the people who really want to get in on the fair trade and fair labor movements.

I met one couple who drove a long ways to get to the event — they found out about it by going to Responsible Shopper, researching sweatshop free clothes, clicking on No Sweat, which led them to a lil blurb about the Fair Trade Fair. That’s what I call serious dedication –

So I’m determined to try and make it easier for people — at least the people who make it to the Fair Trade LA events. Some ideas:

Thanks to everyone who came out. If you didn’t make it this time, make sure you’re on the Fair Trade LA email list so you don’t miss out on future events –

And if you’ve got suggestions, lemme know :)

Pasadena Independent covers Ten Thousand Villages

7 08 2006

The Pasadena Independent wrote about the newly-opened fair trade store, Ten Thousand Villages, Pasadena.

“This is not about handouts,” said store manager Kate Wentland. “It’s about jobs that let them make something beautiful with their hands and then have some dignity at the end of the day knowing they made something someone else can enjoy. This is very different than making something in a factory. ”

Ten Thousand Villages is located at 496 S. Lake Ave. For more information, call Eric and Sarah Clarke at (626) 229-9892 or email them at: eclarke@pasadenavillages.com.

Los Angeles Times writes about fair trade

5 08 2006

Finally — LAT gives fair trade some space!

No mention of our grassroots group Fair Trade LA, though the new Ten Thousand Villages in Pasadena gets a couple paras :)

Most of the article’s actually about Pangea Artisan Market & Cafe, a new venture from people at the International Finance Corp., the private-sector arm of the World Bank Group. The shop’s on the ground floor of IFC’s Washington headquarters. Not really a local angle, though if this first store’s successful, Pangea might expand to LA and San Francisco…

For now — A quick list of where you can get fair trade stuff in LA:

Coffee By the lb, or by the cup.

Chocolate bars, ice cream, or energy bars.

Sugar – Look for Wholesome Sweeteners, which has made a big switch over to fair trade! You can find its stuff even in the big grocery chains like Albertson’s.

Other stuff — Ten Thousand Villages, Pasadena has lots of accessories and household stuff. So does Artisan’s Exchange in Claremont. You might also try your fave museum store — I’ve found some great fair trade goods at the Hammer, MOCA, and LACMA –
