Signed Into Law TODAY: The California Transparency in Supply Chains Act of 2010‏

Standard

I’m pleased to report that The California Transparency in Supply Chains Act of 2010 (SB 657) was signed into law today by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger!  (See the Governor’s press release attached.)

This means that starting January 1, 2012, major apparel and manufacturing companies doing business in California must publicly disclose on their website the policies they have in place to ensure that their supply chains are free of slavery and trafficking, including the extent to which they use 3rd-party verification, conduct independent unannounced audits, and maintain internal accountability for employees and contractors that fail to meet company standards.

Thanks so much for signing on to the letter and demonstrating to the Governor the value of transparency and disclosure, the critical need to protect human rights, and the importance of robust monitoring and reporting systems in global supply chains.

Please be sure to mention this new law to any major retailer and manufacturer that you engage or evaluate and incorporate its requests into your ongoing dialogues and engagements with companies. As you know, there are many initiatives that provide helpful tools to assist companies, such as Responsible Sourcing Network (www.sourcingnetwork.org), Social Accountability International (www.sa-intl.org/), The Global Reporting Initiative (www.globalreporting.org), Global e-Sustainability Initiative (www.gesi.org/), and Electronics Industry Citizenship Coalition (www.eicc.info), to name a few.

We applaud the bill’s author, California Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento), and also express appreciation to Chris Miller with Alliance to Stop Slavery and End Trafficking (ASSET – http://www.assetcampaign.org/) and founder Julia Ormond, former United Nations Goodwill Ambassador Against Slavery and Human Trafficking, for their tireless work as an organizational sponsor of the bill. ASSET will be issuing a press release tomorrow.

Please call with any questions and thanks again for your support!

Best,
