History of Haitian Coffee
Haitians have been growing coffee for over 250 years. At one point, it was one of the largest suppliers of the world's coffee. Now, few know it exists. Haiti won independence from France in 1804 to become the world’s first black republic. Ever since then, they’ve been fighting for economic sovereignty. After their independence, coffee remained one of Haiti’s major export crops, peaking around 1850. In the 1940s Haiti’s coffee sector made a brief comeback where in 1949, Haiti was the third largest coffee exporter in the world. Since then, with the political unrest and instability, along with a series of events, coffee production fell.
Singing Rooster has been working directly with Haiti’s small producers since 2009 to bring Haitian coffee back to the international market. Through growing coffee and cocoa, they work shoulder to shoulder with farmers, regenerate fields, improve techniques, and pay well beyond fair trade prices for crops.
